My No-Experience, No-Budget Plan to Learn Digital Marketing (You Can Steal)

Let me guess—you’re curious about digital marketing, but you’ve got no experience, no budget, and no idea where to start. Maybe you’re stuck in a job that feels like watching paint dry, or maybe you’re just tired of explaining what you do to people who think the internet runs on magic. Either way, I’ve been there. And here’s the good news: You don’t need a fancy degree or a trust fund to get started. You just need a plan. And maybe a strong coffee habit.

This is my no-experience, no-budget plan to break into digital marketing. I’ll walk you through exactly what I’ve done so far, what’s next, and how you can steal this roadmap for yourself.

Step 1: Learn the Basics (Without Going Broke)

Before you start running Google Ads or building email campaigns, you need to understand the fundamentals. I learned the basics using free (or dirt-cheap) online courses. Here’s what I took and why:

  • HubSpot Digital Marketing Certificate

Short, sweet, and focused. Take this first if you want to find out what digital marketing is all about.

  • Google Digital Marketing & E-Commerce Certificate

Covers everything from SEO to email campaigns—gives you a great grounding in the fundamentals without getting into the weeds. Takes about 6 months if you’re studying part time.

  • Google Ads Certifications

Teaches you how to create, optimize, and manage paid ad campaigns. It’s more intermediate-level, so it’s best tackled after you’ve got the basics down.

  • Google Analytics Certification

Helps you track website performance and understand user behavior. Ideal once you’re comfortable with core marketing concepts, and have some real data to work with.

Start with Google’s Digital Marketing Certificate. Take it for free on Coursera—no credit card needed. Pro tip: Skip the fluffy modules and focus on the more technical ones. I’m planning to review the whole course here on the blog, so subscribe below.

Step 2: Stop Reading, Start Doing (Even If You Don’t Get Paid)

Reading about digital marketing is like reading about swimming—you won’t get too far until you jump in. I’m currently gaining hands-on experience two ways:

  • Freelancing

Sites like Upwork and Fiverr are perfect for small gigs. I plan to offer services like email marketing and Google Ads to build my portfolio and learn

  • Launching My Own Online Store

Nothing beats running your own Shopify store for learning SEO, paid ads, and customer acquisition. Bonus: It’s a great case study to show employers. Follwo along on this blog to see how it goes.

"The only time you really learn is when you’re failing."

— Stephen King

Don’t wait until you feel “ready”—sign up on freelancing platforms early. The goal isn’t cash; it’s practice and case studies for your portfolio.

Step 3: Land the Job (Without Years of Experience)

With a solid foundation of skills and real-world projects under your belt, it’s time to land the job. Here’s how I’m going to approach it:

  • Build your Portfolio

My personal website (yep, this one) showcases my skills and blog about what I’m learning. I’m documenting my projects, results, and lessons to stand out from the crowd.

  • Tailor your Applications

I’m going to research marketing agencies I admire, customize my resume and cover letter to highlight relevant skills, and showcase results from my freelancing and online store.

  • Network with Industry Pros:

Stalk people on LinkedIn who are in roles you want. See what experience they have, which qualifications. Message digital agencies that you see yourself at.

  • Interview Practice

From explaining how I optimised an ad campaign to sharing how I measure success, I’m preparing answers that prove I know what I’m doing.

Build your own portfolio website. Don’t worry if you’re not a designer—platforms like WordPress and Wix make it easy. Just focus on showcasing your skills, projects, and certifications.

Follow Along and Steal My Plan

This journey isn’t over. My next goals are to launch my online store, gain more freelance clients, and land my first digital marketing job. And I’m sharing everything—the wins, the fails, and the lessons—right here on this blog.

If you’re thinking about making the leap into digital marketing, why wait? Follow along, steal my plan, and start building your own success story. If I can do it, so can you.
